My soul fuel. Alone-ness.

Recently I did one of those personality tests that tell you what you already knew about yourself (I honestly love taking those tests, they’re always fun). Do you know what I found out? I’m an introvert!

Even though I think I did know that about myself, every time I stand in front of an audience and tell them that, there is a massive round of giggles (myself included). How can someone so socially vocal be an introvert?

Turns out, it’s true. Someone asked me the question, “What do you do to recharge your batteries?” My answer was to grab the dog and go for a long hike. Apparently, that makes me an introvert. My comfort and inspiration comes from within.

I love, love, love to be alone. I like running/hiking alone, I like to travel alone, I like to go to dinner alone – growing up it was surfing or going on a long horseback ride…alone. While I thrive on the energy and presence of the people around me, I find that I’m often seeking a way to get back to being alone. Isn’t that interesting?

The other night I got some of my soul fuel. I put the kids to bed, grabbed a cold Coors Light and hit the driving range. It was like magic…a 75 degree, Friday night in April, just sliently hitting one ball after another in total solitude.Driving range at night.

What about you? What’s your soul fuel? Are you getting enough of it? Do you need to find a way to get more of that fuel?

btw, here’ a link to one of those fun personality tests.

  1. Wow Midori, and I always thought you were an extrovert. But I get it after reading your post. Interesting that introvert vs. extrovert can be defined by what ‘fuels’ us. That makes sense to me. I’m 100% introvert, but when I’m on stage people don’t know it.

  2. You should totally take one of those tests…never in a million years would I have labeled myself as an introvert!
What fuels you Billy Kirsch?? If I had to guess it would be swimming. Or spending time with your kids and family…making you an…EXTROVERT! :)

  3. Love this post, cause I love this topic. I just retook the test, because everyone refuses to believe I am an introvert. Guess what? I am an extrovert now — by only 1 point! When I’m at a conference or trade show I am “on” but have to have quiet alone time, usually breakfast, to recharge.
Another way introvertedness was explained to me is how much sensory data one picks up from one’s surroundings. If you’re at a restaurant and know the couple in the corner is fighting, the kid at the next table is complaining about his homework and the older lady who just walked in dropped a kleenex out of her purse, you are most likely an introvert. Is that true in your case?

  4. @Dana … very, very cool and interesting that we change. I guess I thought for some reason that it was like your IQ – that it was supposed to basically stay the same.
About the senses…OH MY GOSH! That’s so interesting and so extreme for me. I have bat ears, my poor husband can’t even pick at his nails without me complaining about the sound; I can’t wear perfume because it overwhelms me; I have to wear only the softest cotton because everything else feels too scratchy. And I can remember really odd and minutia of detail.
    That is really cool.
